Garden Pests
Every gardener’s nightmare is garden pests. They can ruin the garden one spends hours to maintain. There are different kinds of garden pest; some are animals while the most problematic are insects and birds. It is easier to keep animals out of a garden but it is certainly almost impossible to keep birds and insects out of a garden.
Some of the most common animal pests are cats, dogs and rabbits. They too enjoy the beauty of the lush green environment of a garden in their own way. Generally their way includes the destruction of a well maintained garden.
Rabbits like to eat herbs and small plants and are thus nightmares for the gardener if he has small flowers and plants in his garden. Rabbits also dig holes in the ground destroying ground. Cats and dogs are not generally destructive to the garden, but in some cases they can destroy the garden in innocence.
Squirrels and Raccoons are also common garden pests. They can find different ways to enter a compound and destroy any sort of plantation within. Vegetable and fruit gardens are generally very attractive to squirrels and raccoons and thus they are very dangerous pests for such gardens.
Water gardens are also attractive for raccoons as fish is one of their favorite meals. They might destroy a garden just attempting to catch fish in a water garden.
Gardens are also attractive to birds who like to live in trees and thus they also become garden pests in some cases. Some plants might also be food for some birds such as crows, thus they tend to destroy the plants which took countless hours of devotion and caring on part of the gardener.
However birds also help in protecting a garden as some birds eat insects which might prove to be harmful for the garden. Consequently, they help the gardener keep control over insects.
Grasshoppers can cause a serious pest problem in a garden. They generally feed on grass but occasionally they also feed on leafy vegetables; which means destruction of your vegetable garden. They are unaffected by insecticides which makes them hard to control if one’s garden is infected by them.
The best way is prevention as it is a lot easier than trying to remove their population from one’s garden. Their eggs are laid about 3 inches underground and are covered by a foamy substance which makes them easy to be found. One should take care of these eggs before they hatch and create a serious problem.
