Cleaning Sliding Glass Doors

Many homes have beautiful, often large sliding glass doors leading out into the garden. Naturally, they will require cleaning, in particular during summer, when they will be used the most. Keeping them clean regularly can often avoid major repairs becoming necessary as a result of dirt getting lodged in the tracks. A bucket of warm water with a little washing up liquid usually does the trick quite well.

Although it is obviously necessary to follow instructions provided by companies making glass sliding doors, the following method will usually provide the best way of ensuring all dirt is removed adequately.

The first step is to open the panel about half-way and raising it, followed by swinging the bottom inward to remove the panel from the track. Placing the panel onto saw-horses or something similar will allow it to be hose off with ease. Both sides can then be freed from fingerprints, etc, with the help of the soapy water and a soft sponge. After rinsing, the door can be left to air dry.

In the meantime, the lower track can be thoroughly cleaned with a well squeezed out scrubbing sponge. Once all stubborn dirt has been loosened and removed, both the lower and upper tracks can be wiped over with a damp sponge. Vacuuming the lower track will remove any left over particles.

When remaining glass panels and the entire track have been thoroughly cleaned and dried, a penetrating lubricant can be sprayed into the rollers on the screen panel, but no lubricant should be placed onto the tracks, as this is likely to cause the rollers to slide, as opposed to rolling. The panel can then be replaced and a little graphite spray should be sprayed into the locking mechanism, which should then be operated a couple of times.
